Video lesson: Greetings at Work: Say Hello Like a Professional

Starting a new job is exciting. The first thing you will do is greet people. Here are ten simple greetings you can use at work, from the most formal to the most friendly.

1. Good morning

Use this before 12 pm. It is polite and works with everyone, including your manager.

Good morning, Mr. Khan.

2. Good afternoon

Use this from 12 pm until about 5 pm.

Good afternoon, everyone.

3. Good evening

Use this after 5 pm, for example when you start a night shift or meet someone after work.

Good evening, Sara. Are you working late today?

4. Hello

Hello is polite and safe at any time of day. Use it when you are not sure what to say.

Hello, I’m Ali. I’m the new sales assistant.

5. Nice to meet you

Say this when you meet someone for the first time. The other person often says “Nice to meet you too.”

Hello, I’m Ali. Nice to meet you.

6. How are you?

This is a friendly question, but people do not want a long answer. A short reply is best.

A: How are you?

B: I’m fine, thanks. And you?

7. How’s it going?

This is more friendly than “How are you?”. Use it with colleagues, not on your first day with your manager.

Hi Bilal, how’s it going?

8. Hi

Hi is short and friendly. It is fine with colleagues you know.

Hi Maria! See you at the meeting.

9. Good to see you

Use this when you meet someone again after some time.

Good to see you, Ahmed. How was your holiday?

10. Morning!

Some people say only Morning! instead of “Good morning”. It is very friendly, so use it with colleagues you know well.

Morning, Sam!
